Everyday Skills and Good Manners

Helping your dog develop the everyday skills, good habits, and communication that make life together easier

Does your dog know some basic cues but struggle to respond when you really need them to?

Would you like your dog to come when called, greet people more politely, settle when asked, or navigate everyday situations with greater ease?

Would you like to build on what your dog already knows, creating a stronger foundation, and a dog that can really listen to you when you need their attention?

Together, we'll build practical skills that help your dog understand what's expected while giving you more ways to communicate and cooperate in everyday life.

Would you like to have a dog who is easier to guide, more responsive to your cues, and better prepared to join you in the activities you enjoy?

My approach focuses on teaching useful skills, reinforcing behaviors you want to see more often, and building the understanding that helps those skills carry over into daily life.

Understanding Everyday Skills and Good Manners

Everyday skills aren't just about teaching a dog to sit, stay, or come when called. They're about helping your dog learn how to navigate the world with you, respond to your guidance, and make choices that work well for both of you.

Some dogs need help learning foundational cues. Others understand what we're asking but find it difficult to respond when they're excited, distracted, or unsure what to do. And sometimes, the missing piece isn't another cue at all, but clearer communication, more practice, or a better understanding of how to reinforce the behaviors we want.

We'll look at your dog's existing skills, your daily routines, and the situations where you'd like things to go more smoothly. The goal is to develop practical behaviors and a cooperative relationship that support the life you want to share.

How We'll Work Together

We'll start by discussing what your dog already knows, what you'd like to improve, and where you most need your dog's skills to work in real life. Together, we'll develop a practical plan tailored to your goals.

Depending on your dog and your priorities, our work may include:

Building everday skills

Teaching or refining useful cues such as sit, down, stay, wait, leave it, and coming when called—skills that help your dog navigate everyday situations.

Improving communication and cooperation

Helping you communicate clearly, recognize what your dog is telling you, and build a relationship in which your dog can respond more readily to your guidance.

Practicing polite greetings

Teaching your dog ways to greet people more comfortably, keep their paws on the floor, and manage their excitement when visitors arrive or you meet people out and about.

Strengthening recall (coming when called)

Teaching your dog to come when called and building the skill through practice around gradually increasing distractions

Developing calm and settling skills

Helping your dog learn to relax on a mat, settle while you work or eat, and transition from activity to rest when everyday life calls for

Using skills in everyday life

Helping you recognize your dog's signals, provide clear and supportive guidance, and make decisions that help your dog feel more secure.

What Progress Can Look Like

What would make the biggest difference in your life with your dog?

Would it be having your dog come when called at the park? Welcoming visitors without an exuberant greeting? Enjoying a quiet meal while your dog settles nearby? Or feeling that your dog understands your cues and can join you more easily in everyday activities?

Every dog and household has different priorities. We'll focus on the skills that matter most to you and help you build them into daily life, one step at a time.

Let's Build Skills For Everyday Life

You don't need to have a long list of training goals or know exactly where to start. We'll begin with an assessment to discuss your dog, the skills they'd benefit from learning, and the situations you'd like to make easier.

Together, we'll develop a practical plan tailored to your dog and your goals. Follow-up lessons will help you put those skills into practice, work through challenges, and build on your progress.
